About Tokyo Stock Exchange
Founded on May 15, 1878, the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) is Japan's primary equities venue and the largest exchange in Asia by market capitalization. Operated by Japan Exchange Group (JPX), which was formed by the 2013 merger of TSE and the Osaka Securities Exchange, it underwent a major restructuring in April 2022, replacing the legacy First Section / Second Section / Mothers / JASDAQ tiers with three new segments: Prime (large-cap, governance-rigorous), Standard, and Growth. Headline indices include the price-weighted Nikkei 225 (continuous since 1950) and the broader market-cap weighted TOPIX.
